nihilistic airlines

The subject matter for today’s 10 minute rambling is going to sound like the start to a bad jerry seinfeld bit, but it’s dominating my mind today.

Why on god’s green earth are airline tickets so expensive when very few of them provide premium offerings?

I can understand material / technical overhead costs, but seriously some flights cost way too much for what you receive as the end user.

I have a feeling that we’re going to look back on human existence to realize how comical airlines are as a service offering - like, we really destroyed the earth so we could pay way too much money to be made uncomfortable for a handful of hours, just so we can all do essentially the same stuff we do anyways just somewhere else?

That’s obviously a very nihilistic way of viewing it, but I guess shopping for emergency last-minute flights during the holidays will do that to me.

A potential solution to the airline price-gouging issue in a free market would be to offer an alternative.

*cough* high speed rail *cough*

I mean, having just driven up to seattle and back for thanksgiving - 17 hours each way, no stops - was worth it to save $500 on flying, I’d absolutely take a train up if tickets were at a reasonable cost.

It’s just unfortunate we can’t seem to make that happen though, and I don’t really feel like writing about the why behind it, because my political bias is far too skewed and I’m already feeling nihilistic enough as is.

Strangely enough this entry is beginning to feel like my most vulnerable one yet, but I’m only just over a week into making these public. I’ll surely outdo myself soon.
