oxygen is good
There’s a lot that I know I don’t know, and i’m sure there’s plenty more i don’t know that I don’t know.
Still with me?
I just can’t get over the fact that I didn’t know I didn’t know how to breathe correctly.
Lemme back up.
I started swimming recently - for fitness - and while much about swimming is a challenging exercise, I didn’t realize the most challenging part of the exercise would be the breathing.
Then again, the same is nearly true for other exercises, like yoga or vocal performance.
It’s just that I’ll be doing a set, feeling fine, when all of a sudden it dawns on me that I’m holding my breath. Then my lungs seize up and I have to pause.
I find that even outside of the pool in every day life, I hold my breath - almost instinctually.
Isn’t our first instinct to breathe? I’ve heard time and time again that it’s not something we need to consciously think about doing to do.
Yet I feel as if I kinda do.
Speaking of instincts, I guess even newborn babies hold their breath when they find themselves submerged.
I think that’s not only an incredible fact but also very related to today’s 10-minute rambling.
All this to say, I think I gotta work on my breathing.
Seems like these breath work workshops are all the rage today - not sure we’ll be taking it that far but not gonna rule it out.
I’ll just stick to swimming / yoga style breath-work for the time being.
